The Justice Department has recovered more than $3 billion under the False Claims Act in the fiscal 2011 year, with $2.4 billion in recoveries involving fraud committed against federal healthcare programs.
The DOJ recently released its total recovery figures for fraud, but this report details the False Claims Act and whistleblower suits.
Since Jan. 2009, the government has recovered a total of $8.7 billion under the False Claims Act — the largest three-year total in the DOJ’s history. Since Jan. 2009, the DOJ has used the False Claims Act to recover more than $6.6 billion in federal healthcare dollars.
Of the $3 billion recovered this year, $2.8 billion of that was recouped in whistleblower cases. Qui tam suits hit a peak at 638 this past year. They usually stand in the 300s and low 400s, according to the release.
