Siemens’ Exit From Radiotherapy Boosts Varian and Elekta

After last week’s announcement that Siemens, Europe’s largest engineering company, would exit the radiation therapy market, stocks of Varian Medical Systems, a Palo Alto-based maker of radiotherapy tools to treat cancer, rose yesterday, according to a Bloomberg Businessweek report.

Varian stock had been down 18 percent this year before yesterday’s increase. Analysts say Stockholm-based Elekta AB, a company producing treatments for cancer and brain disorders, could also benefit.
