Earlier this year, UPMC’s transplant program received a positive hepatitis C test result in a living donor but continued with the planned transplant. In May, UPMC self-reported to OPTN that it voluntarily suspended its living donor kidney and liver transplant program after it discovered the error.

UPMC resumed its transplant program in July after extensive review of its protocols and corrective action plan by the center and an OPTN committee. A corrective action plan was initiated, but follow-up reviews of the program by the OPTN committee revealed other communication and documentation issues requiring correction, leading to the hospital’s placement on probation.
As a result of the probation, UPMC must enact a corrective action plan to remedy the violations found by OPTN.
