Dr. Fiskum has spent the last 14 years with his research team at the University of Maryland School of Medicine working with patients with traumatic brain injuries. He and his team have described many molecular mechanisms that can damage the brain and have been able to describe how different levels of harmful free radicals can be produced from oxygen in the cells.
The recent studies, led by Dr. Fiskum, have led to a $3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health and nearly $4 million in funding from the Department of Defense.
