Q: What impact is the economy having on ASCs?
William Southwick:
Without additional physician members to drive case volume, growth is likely to be anywhere between flat to down 5 percent. Higher deductibles and job loss inevitably will hamper growth from existing partners.

Q: What is the most important thing an ASC can do in 2009 to preserve profits?
WS:
My advice would be to have more direct marketing to large employers, health plans and available surgeons. Active same store growth effort is a must, and you must "take the gloves off" when making price comparisons.
