FirstHealth of the Carolinas and Rex Healthcare are attempting to build the ASC near Erwin, N.C., by piggybacking off a certificate of need previously issued for a new hospital.

The project has yet to receive approval for the project from the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation. An endorsement from the Harnett county commissioners, which has rejected the request several times, may help the new surgery center receive this approval from the state, according to the report.

The board rejected the latest request by a 3-2 vote.
