20% of Massachusetts Hospital Employees Declined Flu Vaccination

A Massachusetts Department of Public Health report shows one-fifth of all acute-care hospital workers declined receiving influenza vaccination in 2010-2011.

Beginning in 2011, all licensed healthcare facilities in Massachusetts are required to report vaccination rates to the state department. The 2010-2011 report shows of 73 reporting hospitals (out of 74 total Massachusetts hospitals), an average of 70.3 percent of hospital employees were vaccinated while 20.1 percent declined vaccination.

The top three hospitals with the highest vaccination rates were Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington (96.1 percent), Children’s Hospital in Boston (91.2 percent) and Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington (88.3 percent).

The report is being released as hospitals across the country implement new mandatory flu vaccination policies, signaling a possible emerging trend in the healthcare industry.
