Maryland has the highest concentration of ASCs in the U.S., with about eight centers per 100,000 residents, according to an October white paper from Medicus Healthcare Solutions.
The staffing firm counted about 10,900 ASCs operating nationwide as of October 2026, based on its proprietary data. Medicus calculated per-capita figures using U.S. Census Bureau population estimates and its own ASC counts, rounded to the nearest whole number.
States with the most ASCs per 100,000 residents:
- Maryland: 8
- Georgia: 6
- Idaho: 5
- Arizona: 5
States with the fewest ASCs per 100,000 residents:
- Vermont: Fewer than 1
- Iowa: 1
- Maine: 2
- Rhode Island: 2
By total count, California, Texas and Florida each have more than 700 ASCs, the highest tier in the report.
Regulation shapes some of these numbers. Georgia’s 2024 certificate-of-need reforms exempt certain single-specialty ASCs owned by one physician or practice, as long as they stay under capital spending and operating room thresholds, Becker’s reported in January.
At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
