Allegheny Health Network appointed Nipun Merchant, MD, as chair of its department of surgery and its first surgeon-in-chief, effective February 2027.
Dr. Merchant will oversee surgical services across the network’s hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers, according to an Oct. 14 news release. He will also lead the department’s clinical, academic and strategic growth, including faculty recruitment, surgical program expansion and research.
He joins AHN from the University of Miami Health System and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he served in several leadership roles, including chief surgical officer, executive director of perioperative services and chief of the division of surgical oncology.
Dr. Merchant has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed scientific publications and held leadership roles with several national surgical and oncology organizations.
He succeeds David Bartlett, MD, who served as interim chair of the department of surgery during the national search process. AHN operates 16 hospitals and employs approximately 27,000 people.
