USA Swimming has named Ankit Shah, MD, a sports cardiologist based in Chevy Chase, Md., as its chief medical officer, according to an Oct. 12 report from Montgomery Community Media.
Dr. Shah has worked with USA Swimming since 2018. As chief medical officer, he will help oversee medical care for the organization’s national team athletes, shape its medical policies and advise athletes on return-to-sport decisions.
Dr. Shah founded Sports & Performance Cardiology in Chevy Chase and serves as its president. The practice gives specialized cardiovascular care to athletes and active people, from recreational competitors to college, professional and Olympic athletes.
He also chairs the American College of Cardiology’s Sports and Exercise Leadership Council and sits on the NBA Cardiac Advisory Committee.
“Health is the foundation of performance,” Dr. Shah said in a statement. “By optimizing athletes’ health, we can help them perform at their best.”
The appointment puts a cardiologist at the top of medical leadership for the national governing body that selects and trains U.S. Olympic swimmers.
At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
