Durango, Colo.-based physician Daniel Caplin has been sued by Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser over allegations he defrauded Colorado Medicaid of more than $374,000, according to a Sept. 15 news release.
Dr. Caplin allegedly continued billing Medicaid for opioid addiction treatment services at his practice, Colorado Addiction Treatment Services, after its controlled substance license expired June 3, 2022, according to the release.
The Colorado Behavioral Health Administration had identified violations at the clinic in March 2022, placing it on 90-day probation, and notified the practice in June 2022 that its license had expired; the clinic did not submit the required corrective actions.
The lawsuit, filed in Denver District Court under the Colorado Medicaid False Claims Act, alleges Dr. Caplin submitted 703 claims totaling $270,665 for buprenorphine administration and 1,001 claims totaling $103,576 for evaluation and management services tied to substance use disorder treatment, between June 2022 and November 2023.
