More than 30 ASCs and physician practices have closed in 2026, and the reasons vary from consolidation to competition.
Here are five recent closures and the headwinds behind them.
1. SurgiCare at CAMC Memorial Hospital (Charleston, W.Va.): Folded into other CAMC facilities as part of a consolidation effort the health system said was meant to “reduce duplication and maximize efficiency.”
2. North Country Orthopaedic Ambulatory Surgery Center and North Country Orthopaedic Group (Watertown, N.Y.): Winding down as part of North Star Health Alliance’s broader “restructuring and operational stabilization efforts.”
3. Sterling Surgical Center (Orchard Park, N.Y.): Closed after patient volume declined “to low levels” over the prior 12 months.
4. Surgery Center of Southern Oregon (Medford, Ore.): Closed June 30 after a competing ASC opened by Southern Oregon Orthopedics pulled away patient volume and revenue.
5. River View Surgery Center (Lancaster, Ohio): Closing this spring as parent Fairfield Medical Center heads toward acquisition by Columbus-based OhioHealth — OhioHealth’s fifth hospital deal in about three years. Fairfield cited “reimbursement shortfalls, rising supply costs and ongoing workforce challenges.”
