University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson has enrolled 16 registered nurses in the inaugural class of its new certified registered nurse anesthetist program this semester, launching Mississippi’s second academic pathway into the specialty, Red Hills MS News reported Aug. 19.
The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs accredited UMMC’s program in July. The degree track is a post-baccalaureate Doctor of Nursing Practice with a nurse anesthesia specialization, a 36-month program built on COA standards and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice.
The University of Southern Mississippi runs the state’s only other CRNA program, making UMMC’s the second in Mississippi.
The 16 nurses in UMMC’s first cohort will spend the next three years working toward the doctoral credential required to become certified registered nurse anesthetists.
