Physician who sold to PE launches marketplace to keep practice sales ‘doctor-to-doctor’

A Mansfield, Mass., optometrist who sold his practice to a private equity-backed group in 2023 has launched PracticeAmerica, a “doctor-to-doctor” practice transition marketplace designed to give independent physicians a seller-financed exit path without brokers or PE involvement, according to a July 30 news release.

Joel Hayden, OD, founded the platform after more than 30 years in independent practice ownership, drawing on a seller-financed deal that launched his own career when banks declined to fund his 1993 practice purchase.

PracticeAmerica charges sellers a single 5% fee at closing with no upfront costs and no fees to buyers, and serves solo and small-group physicians in optometry, dentistry, primary care, podiatry, dermatology and chiropractic, including practices that fall below private equity’s acquisition threshold.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
