Nurses, patients protest North Star Health Alliance ASC closure

Ogdensburg, N.Y.-based North Star Health Alliance planned to close North Country Orthopaedic Group in Watertown, N.Y., on July 31 after nearly 70 years in operation, and the bankrupt health system is now awaiting state approval to close the practice’s attached ambulatory surgery center, local CBS-affiliate WWNY-TV reported July 31.

Nurses and patients voiced frustration at a July 30 public hearing on the ASC’s closure, one of several hearings North Star held that week on its broader restructuring plans. Donald Metzger, a patient who has received care at the orthopedic group for more than 50 years, said watching the practice’s historical photos come down felt “like being punched in the stomach.” according to the report.

Staff said they felt blindsided by the decision. “We are so sorry. We didn’t make this decision. Our patients are crying with us. We have celebrated with our patients, cried with them, mourned with them. We are a family,” said Kathy Walters, LPN.

Kelly Callahan, RN, told the hearing the ASC is the only outpatient surgery center of its type in the tri-county area, and its closure would push small elective procedures onto the operating rooms at Samaritan Medical Center and Carthage Area Hospital. Interim CEO Andrew Manzer thanked staff for continuing to provide care through the transition.

Procedures continue at the surgery center while North Star awaits the state’s decision on its closure request.

North Star Health Alliance filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February and has since cut more than 100 positions and closed multiple service lines across its Northern New York facilities.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
