The FBI’s Newark office began the program following an estimated $7.5 million in losses in New Jersey from healthcare fraud in 2010. The campaign starts with a series of digital advertisements in shopping malls and on highway billboards that will encourage consumers to identify and report fraud.
According to the report, healthcare fraud accounts for one of the largest losses of taxpayer dollars from any government program. Only 18 cases of fraud were reported by the public in 2010.
FBI officials hope the campaign will increase the number of reports provided by patients who suspect a healthcare provider has overbilled them or billed for procedures that were not performed. The ad campaign will run for two months and could be expanded nationally if successful.
