Cecil Borel III, MD, a professor emeritus at Duke Anesthesiology and pioneer in neurocritical care, has died at age 75.
At Duke, Dr. Borel established a neuroanesthesiology program and a neurosurgical ICU. When neuroanesthesia became an independent division in 1997, he was appointed its inaugural chief, according to a May 14 news release from the Duke University School of Medicine.
Dr. Borel was among the first to multidisciplinary approach to ICU care, integrating internal medicine, neurology, anesthesiology and neurosurgery experts.
In addition, he helped create one of the earliest Acute Care Nurse Practitioner programs in the U.S., with a specific focus on neurocritical care and developed the nurse practitioner rounding model.
Before joining Duke in 1993, Dr. Borel was a foundational member of the team at Johns Hopkins that established the third neuroscience critical care unit in the world, the release said.
