A physician in Newark, Del., has agreed to pay $180,000 to resolve False Claims Act allegations relating to fraudulent genetic testing.

Between April and November 2019, Shayasta Mufti, MD, ordered medically unnecessary genetic tests for more than 100 Medicare patients, according to an April 29 news release from the Justice Department. In many of the cases, the orders were based solely on telemedicine consultations, according to the Justice Department.

Dr. Mufti did not have an established physician-patient relationship with the patients, did not discuss the test results and did not use the results to inform patient treatment, the department said.

The genetic tests ordered by Dr. Mufti cost Medicare thousands of dollars per patient, the release said.
