Miami-based Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is now offering sedation-free transnasal endoscopy using the EvoEndo system, becoming the first in South Florida to provide the option.
The approach allows physicians to evaluate the upper digestive tract through the nose as an alternative to traditional endoscopy performed through the mouth, eliminating the need for sedation, according to an April 22 system news release.
The method can reduce disruptions for families by avoiding missed school and workdays tied to procedures requiring anesthesia. The technique can also be performed in an outpatient setting without advance fasting, IV placement or extended recovery time.
The option may be particularly relevant for pediatric patients with eosinophilic esophagitis, who often require multiple endoscopies during treatment, according to the release.
