Miami-based Nicklaus Children’s Hospital has introduced a sedation-free procedure to evaluate the upper digestive tract in pediatric patients, becoming the first in South Florida to do so.

The procedure, transnasal endoscopy, is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional upper endoscopy performed through the mouth. It enables clinicians to examine the esophagus, stomach and upper small intestine without sedation, according to an April 13 news release.

The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting with minimal preparation and takes about an hour. It eliminates the need for intravenous lines and shortens recovery time tied to anesthesia.

Nicklaus Children’s gastroenterology team uses an ultrathin scope inserted through the nose. The approach may be particularly useful for patients with eosinophilic esophagitis, who often require repeat endoscopies to monitor treatment.

By avoiding sedation, the procedure may reduce disruptions for patients and families, including missed school and work time, according to the release.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
