5 ways for physicians to maintain work-life balance

Archives of Internal Medicine published a 2012 study finding physicians were twice as likely to report dissatisfaction with work-life balance, which is a key contributor to physician burn-out, according to eVisit.

Here are five ways to maintain a better work-life balance.

1. Pencil in some "me" time. Allot some time on your calendar to focus on your mental, physical and emotional health, whether that is spending a day with family or running a couple miles.

2. Utilize telemedicine appointments. Consider conducting a handful of patient consults from a convenient location via telemedicine.

3. Take breaks. While you may have to schedule back-to-back appointments some days, this may result in exhaustion and burnout. Schedule breaks based on times during the day when you feel less energized so you can decompress and then resume your patient visits.

4. Delegate. Physician assistants and other staff members are useful team members who can perform some of your daily tasks. Spend your time and energy wisely.

5. Be present. When you are on vacation with family, don't consume your thoughts with work. Similarly, focus on work when you are in the office.
