Government to Spend $116M Toward Expanding Medicare Fraud Strike Forces

Congress is on its way to granting President Obama's request for a record $1.7 billion to stamp out healthcare fraud, with $116 million of that to go toward expanding Medicare strike forces, according to a Bloomberg Businessweek report.

The money represents a $250 million increase in money spent in fighting healthcare fraud, almost half of which will go toward increasing the numbers of strike forces from seven cities to 20 cities. Congress is projecting Medicare fraud investigations to triple from the huge investment. The new legislation is stalled due to a debate over government spending.

The strike force program has saved approximately $1.9 billion and prosecuted more than 800 people, according to the article.
