Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) introduced HR 3556, which would provide a mechanism for healthcare providers and suppliers to disclose actual and potential violations of the physician self-referral law, according to a release form Rep. McDermott's office.

The bill gives the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services a key leadership role in the self-disclosure process, while involving the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service's Office of Inspector General when violations are criminal in nature, according to the release.

Rep. McDermott said in the release that unintended administrative mistakes happen in the complex healthcare system and believes that a means should be set in place to correct these mistakes and recover money, where appropriate.
