Florida Physician Disciplined for Overprescribing Pain Pills

A Fort Myers, Fla., family doctor has been placed on probation and fined $20,000 for overprescribing pain medications to one patient, according to a report by the Naples Daily News.

In a settlement with the Florida Board of Medicine, Ida J. Gagliardi, MD, was disciplined for failing to practice medicine within acceptable standards.

An administrative complaint by the state Department of Health said Dr. Gagliardi prescribed 1,500 tablets of Roxicodone at each of four visits with a 41-year-old patient over a three-month period. The complaint said there was no indication she reviewed medical records from the patient's visit to a pain management physician.
