Johnson & Johnson to Dole Out $2.5B in Metal Hip Replacement Lawsuit Settlement

Spinal Tech

Johnson & Johnson, owners of the DePuy Articular Surface Replacement hip implant, has agreed to pay a $2.5 billion settlement to resolve lawsuits with patients injured by the metal-on-metal device, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

The terms of the settlement must be approved in court, and individual payouts may or may not be awarded. Each patient could receive about $350,000 in compensation.

The hip device made its global market debut in 2003 and was recalled in 2010 after sharply increasing failure rates from metallic debris being released as the device wears. Approximately 93,000 patients globally received the implant.
