Tennessee Academy of Ophthalmology Contests Legislation Allowing Optometrists Larger Range of Procedures

The Tennessee Academy of Ophthalmology is speaking against the recently filed SB220/HB555 bill, which would give optometrists the power to inject the tissue surrounding the eye with anesthesia.

Currently, optometrists are limited to the use of only topical anesthesia, but the advent of injectable anesthesia in optometrist practices would allow the ability to perform more complex surgical procedures.

A recent survey of Tennessee voters revealed that there is widespread support for the existing law that requires such complex surgeries to be performed by someone with a medical degree.
