5 Points on Ophthalmologist Compensation

Here are five points on compensation for ophthalmologists based on the Medscape Physician Compensation Report 2012. Ophthalmologists are among the top 10 highest-paid specialties, according to the report.

1. Average ophthalmologist compensation in 2011 was $270,000, which was slightly higher than compensation reported in 2010.

2. 38 percent of ophthalmologists reported compensation increases in 2011 over 2010, while 31 percent reported decreases.

3. The highest compensating region of the country, the West (which includes California and Hawaii) reported $315,000 average income, while the lowest compensating region (Southeast — Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky) reported $253,000.

4. Healthcare organizations were the highest compensating practice setting, with an average of $352,000 annually, while hospitals were the lowest compensating at $147,000.

5. Male ophthalmologists reported receiving $79,000 more on average than female ophthalmologists.
