Work underway on USC surgery center

Construction on the University of Southern California's new Norris Healthcare Center is now underway, say college officials.

The upcoming center will house an ambulatory surgery center, a women's cancer program and oncology clinics. The facility will also have an on-site pharmacy and waiting areas for both patients and families.

Thomas E. Jackiewicz, senior vice president and CEO for USC Health, said the new facility will be a model for ambulatory care.

''Today we celebrate one more opportunity to truly excel in our mission of quality healthcare that is personalized, compassionate and innovative,'' he said.

College officials said the center was the product of the Norris family and their eponymous foundation, which made a recent contribution of $15 million. Another $40 million was secured through other philanthropic efforts, officials said, as the university continues its effort to raise $1.5 billion for its healthcare-related services and studies.
