U.S. healthcare organizations suggest ways to mitigate drug shortages: 4 key points

A group of healthcare organizations released a report that includes recommendations for dealing with ongoing drug shortages in the United States, according to a Pharmaceutical-Journal report.

The group includes the American Hospital Association, American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, Institute for Safe Medication Practices and The Pew Charitable Trusts.

Some of the recommendations, according to the Pharmaceutical-Journal, include:

•    Manufacturers should be allowed to sell trial batches of drugs that meet quality specifications to mitigate shortages.
•    Pharmaceutical companies should be incentivised to invest in capacity and reliability to prevent supply disruptions.
•    Regulatory review processes for plant upgrades and repairs needs to be sped up.
•    Greater synchronisation is needed between the processes of international regulators.

The report is a result of a summit held in August 2014 comprising of the aforementioned groups.
