President Obama enlists Anthem, Cigna and Ceasars Entertainment to help study medical billing

President Barack Obama and health secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell announced a partnership with companies and trade associations to find a replacement to the fee-for-service model of payment, with the objective of half of Medicare's $362 billion in payments to be linked to measurements of how well a patient was cared for by 2018, reports the Indianapolis Business Journal.

"It is in our common interest to build a healthcare system that delivers better care, spends our healthcare dollars more wisely, and results in healthier people," Mr. Burwell said. "When government and business work together we can all benefit. Patients can get the right care at the right time, doctors can achieve the best ideals of their profession, and healthcare can be more affordable for individuals and companies."

Anthem "is fully supportive of the Department of Health and Human Services' goal to transform the nation's health system to emphasize value over volume," the company said.

Members of the Anthem network are expected share their methods for payment in ways that put emphasis on quality instead of quantity, reports the Indianapolis Business Journal.
