One-third of Americans delay medical treatment due to cost: 5 key survey findings

According to a recent Gallup Poll, one in three Americans say they have put off getting medical treatment that they or their family members need because of cost, despite a drop in the uninsured rate.

Here are five key findings from the poll:

•    Fifty-seven percent of the uninsured population has put off treatment as compared to 34 percent with private insurance and 22 percent with Medicare or Medicaid.
•    Thirty-four percent of Americans with private health insurance reported putting off medical treatment because of cost, versus 25 percent in 2013.
•    Thirty-five percent of lower-income Americans (with annual household incomes of under $30,000) report putting off medical treatment in 2014, down from 43 percent in 2013.
•    Upper-income Americans report delaying treatment in greater numbers, with percentages rising from 17 percent in 2013 to 28 percent this year.
•    Additionally, 22 percent of Americans say they have put off medical treatment for a "very" or "somewhat serious" condition.

Results of the poll are based on telephone interviews with a random sample of 828 adults.
