Oklahoma Surgery Center Settles Fraudulent Billing Claims for $3.5M

The Orthopedic and Reconstructive Center of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City has paid $3.5 million to settle claims by the federal government that it billed payors for medical procedures that were not performed, according to a report by The Oklahoman.
The center was accused of defrauding Medicare, Medicaid and TRICARE/CHAMPUS by filing false claims and billing for procedures that were never performed.
The case stemmed from a lawsuit filed by former employees of the center in 2000. According to the suit, the center billed the payors for surgeries performed by a hand surgeon at the center while he was out of state and used physician assistants to perform the procedures instead.
The center settled without admitting any wrongdoing.
