The net neutrality debate on Capitol Hill seems far away from most physicians' and healthcare providers' minds. But, Healthcare DIVE argues, providers should pay attention because net neutrality does impact healthcare.
The Federal Communications Commission ruled in favor of net neutrality last week in a three-to-two vote. Here are four things to know:
1. Internet providers aren't able to block or slow traffic, or in other ways offer "preferential treatment" to those paying premium fees.
2. Bandwith is limited, and could be slowed for medical applications since providers won't be able to achieve preferential treatment. Essentially, internet use for entertainment and for healthcare will be on the same plane.
3. Some physicians, including Anthony Pizarro, MD, quoted in healthcare DIVE, are in favor of this decision because it places independent physicians on the same operating field as those in large groups for internet access.
4. There are questions about whether mobile services are high quality enough to enable mHealth services, products and applications, according to another Healthcare DIVE report.
