Approximately 11.2 million additional individuals have enrolled in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program as of January 2015 — a 19.3 percent increase from the average monthly enrollment in 2013 from July through September.
Medicaid expansion through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act resulted in 28 states, plus the District of Columbia, providing greater access to healthcare coverage for uninsured low-income individuals. Among the states that had implemented the Medicaid expansion and were covering newly eligible individuals, Medicaid and CHIP enrollment rose by 26.1 percent compared to the July throughSeptember 2013 baseline period.
