Lawsuit filed against Connecticut ASC

There was a recent lawsuit filed alleging negligence, corporate negligence and malpractice against a Connecticut surgery center, according to a NewsTimes report.

However, the Connecticut Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers is defending the safety and efficacy of ASCs.

"Ambulatory care centers are one of the most highly regulated sectors of the healthcare delivery system," Ken Rosenquest, president of the Connecticut Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers, told NewsTimes. "In fact, surgery centers are held to the same level of scrutiny and regulation as hospitals and have extensive policies and procedures in place to ensure patient safety and reduce the risk of human error."

In 2013, the Department of Public Health reported 20 adverse events at outpatient centers, according to the report. Adverse events are defined as "incidents where a patient dies or is injured as the result of a medical intervention, rather than the underlying medical condition."
