Healthcare jobs grew more than 50 percent in 2014 over 2013, according to a Forbes report.
Here are five things to know:
1. Healthcare created 311,000 jobs in 2014.
2. Billions of dollars have been pumped into the healthcare system over the past few years, especially with the roll out of the health insurance exchanges covering millions of Americans for the first time.
3. Medicaid expansion led to a surge in more people seeking medical care after spring 2014. This coincided with a surge in healthcare job numbers.
4. The hospital sector grew in 2014 after shrinking in 2013. It gained around 50,000 jobs last year.
5. If Congress repeals healthcare reform — taking the insurance away from many who received it last year — and allows for steeper Medicare reimbursement cuts, healthcare jobs could once again take a hit. However, if ACA-holdout states go in the opposite direction and expand Medicaid, they could create a flood of new jobs in the hospital and healthcare sector.
