Healthcare IT's impact: 5 key steps to overcome dangers

Solo and independent practitioners have many challenges today, and one false move with healthcare IT implementation could spell significant trouble, according to an article published in SearchHealthIT.

Upgrading healthcare information technology and using electronic medical records are now an important part of meeting meaningful use requirements. But, improper implementation could seriously threaten a physician's independence. Here are five key dangers to look out for:

1. Perform a HIPAA risk assessment to make sure your new technology meets safeguards to protect patient information. Breaches are costly both financially and to the practice's reputation.

2. Find a local health IT provider who is knowledgeable about different vendors—including fellow physicians or group practice administrators, to consult about new technology.

3. Cloud systems can protect patient records and provide EHR data access with relatively low local infrastructure dependence.

4. Make sure service providers sign a business associates' agreement recognizing they are HIPAA compliant and will meet the practice's standards for coverage.

5. Plan for disaster recovery with the EHR vendor to make sure everyone is on the same page to restore systems after errors occur and recover patient data.
