Florida Orthopedic Surgeon Pleads Guilty to Fraud for Accepting Consulting Fees for Services Never Performed
Shekhar Desai, MD, an orthopedic surgeon in Brevard County, Fla., has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud for accepting $70,000-$120,000 in consulting fees from DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, for services he never performed, according to a report by Florida Today.
Dr. Desai, a member of physician practice MIMA, was accused of accepting payment for training and operating room sessions from July 2004-Nov. 2005 that were never performed.
He faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
