Florida Hospital CEO Pens Op-Ed Piece in Support of Physician-Owned Hospitals
Stan Holm, CEO of Pasco Regional Medical Center in Dade City, Fla., recently appeared in the St. Petersburg Times as an author of an op-ed piece in support of physician-owned hospitals.
In the piece, Mr. Holm discusses the recent efforts by Congress to prohibit physicians from owning hospitals and shares reasons why PRMC, and member of the local community, could be harmed if these efforts are successful.
Mr. Holm explains that some lawmakers believe that physicians who own hospitals are incentives to promote its use and thereby increase costs. However, he argues the physician-ownership at PRMS has actually helped the hospital to control costs, writing
"in sharp contrast, physician ownership at PRMC has allowed us to align our interests to control costs, improve quality of care and outcomes, and provide our patients with a more satisfying experience. (In some other communities, allowing physicians to own a small percentage of a full-service, community hospital has literally kept that hospital from closing.)"
