Eye Surgeon Dr. Howard Gimbel Uses YouTube to Teach Surgery Techniques

Howard Gimbel, MD, chairman of the department of ophthalmology at Loma Linda (Calif.) University Medical Center, uploaded his first YouTube video of eye surgery two years ago, according to a Loma Linda Patch report.

Since then, the videos, which demonstrate innovative ophthalmic surgery techniques, have grown into a collection of more than 100 videos known as the Gimbel Library and have been viewed by more than 72,000 medical students, residents and practicing surgeons. Dr. Gimbel received his medical degree from Loma Linda University in 1960 and completed his residency in ophthalmology at the White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles in 1964. Returning to his birthplace in Calgary, Canada, he opened the first out-of-hospital operating rooms for eye surgery in Canada.
