Dial ASC for murder: Fictional facility at center of doctor's 2nd thriller

As is often the case with professionals who work in the healthcare field, medicine isn't the lone pursuit of Glenn Shepard, MD. In this instance, Dr. Shepard isn't just a surgeon — he also doubles as a crime thriller novelist.

Dr. Shepard's new book, "The Missile Game," centers on the fictional Dr. Scott James, a renowned plastic surgeon who is charged with murder after two bodies are found at his ambulatory surgery center.

Turns out, that's only the tip of the iceberg for Dr. Shepard and his hero.

"A criminal mastermind is developing his own fleet of deadly laser-firing drones. An ISIS terrorist cell is building a secret missile base deep in rural North Carolina. The two sides are about to go to war, and it's up to Dr. Scott James to stop the carnage," reads Dr. Shepard's book description.

Giving new occasion to the phrase, "Write what you know," Dr. Shepard is no stranger to the setting of a surgery center himself.

After completing medical school at the University of Virginia and his residency at Vanderbilt, Dr. Shepard opened his own center in Eastern Virginia, where he worked for 23 years, mostly in a solo practice.

Over all, he's been in practice for 52 years and has written another thriller, titled "Not for Profit," another crime thriller with a four-star rating on Amazon.com.
