CASCA Studies Highlight Value of State's ASCs

The Colorado Ambulatory Care Surgery Center Association has released two reports on studies which demonstrate the impact and value of the state's 112 ASCs, according to a news release.

The reports — "The Economic Impact of Ambulatory Surgery Centers in Colorado" and "CASCA's Quality Research Initiative Results 2010" — show that the ASCs generated nearly $1.6 million in economic growth and approximately $195 million in tax revenues for the state, driven by more than 3,000 full-time individuals working in the facilities.

The reports also explore the costs of procedures in ASCs, showing procedures in surgery centers are less expensive than in hospitals due to lower administrative and overhead costs.

"The numbers speak for themselves," said says Lisa Austin, president of CASCA, in the release. "ASCs are a safe, affordable alternative to hospital- performed procedures. If you are relatively healthy and thinking of undergoing a surgical procedure, you should ask your surgeon if you have a choice of where the procedure will be performed as it can make a difference in healthy outcomes."
