Bipartisan Budget Would Delay 20.1% Medicare Pay Cut to Physicians, Give 0.5% Raise

The House of Representatives passed a bipartisan budget yesterday that would impact Medicare payment cuts to physicians if passed by the Senate, according to a Medscape Medical News report.

Under the Sustainable Growth Rate, Medicare announced it would cut physician pay 20.1 percent in 2014. The budget would postpone that pay cut rate until April 1, 2014 and give physicians a 0.5 percent raise during the interim period.

The delay would also give legislators time to pass an SGR repeal crafted by the Senate Finance Committee and House Ways and Means Committee, shifting Medicare compensation to pay-for-performance and consolidating three Medicare incentive programs into a single program, according to the report. The bill will be sent to the floor of both chambers for a full vote, likely held early next year.
