Biomet Spinal Product Sales Investigated
The U.S. attorney's offices in Massachusetts and West Virginia are investigating Biomet, a leading orthopedic device manufacturer, for improper sales, promotion and billing by its spinal device unit, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
Biomet recently reported the investigations into the company's EBI unit, which makes electric stimulators to increase bone regeneration following spine surgery, to the Securities and Exchange Commission,
Recently, unsealed lawsuits in the states allege that Biomet promoted the off-label use of its spine stimulation devices, which resulted in fraudulent Medicare and Medicaid billing. Biomet denies the allegations.
