ASC vs. HOPD Cost Compare in Virginia: 13 Statistics

moneyVirginia Health Information published its 2013 Health Care Pricing Report, which includes cost comparisons for several outpatient procedures between ambulatory surgery centers and hospital outpatient departments, according to a News Medical report.

The report is designed to promote healthcare cost transparency and includes average price information for facility fees, physician fees and emergency room care. The average prices at ASCs were often reported as lower than HOPD prices. When the average prices are broken down, both physician and facility fees were less at ASCs than HOPDs.

Colonoscopy
Surgeon: $195 at ASCs, $260 at HOPDs
Physician: $293 at ASCs, $315 at HOPDs
Facility: $1,001 at ASC, $1,842 at HOPDs
Total: $2,376 at ASCs, $3,287 at HOPDs

Arthroscopic knee surgery
Surgeon: $929 at ASCs, $1,022 at HOPDs
Facility: $2,624 at ASCs, $4,476 at HOPDs
Total: $4,072 at ASCs, $6,086 at HOPDs

Rotator cuff surgery
Surgeon: $2,022 at ASCs, $2,227 at HOPDs
Facility: $3,150 at ASCs, $7,988 at HOPDs
Total: $6,010 at ASCs, $11,181 at HOPDs

Hernia repair
Surgeon: $702 at ASCs, $802 at HOPDs
Facility: $2,454 at ASCs $4,962 at HOPDs
Total: $3,713 at ASCs, $6,407 at HOPDs
