6 Things for ASC Leaders to Know for Thursday

Here are six news updates for ambulatory surgery center leaders to know for Nov. 14, 2013.

Alpine Surgery Center physician named 2014 Winter Olympics CMO.
Gloria Beim, MD, of Alpine Surgery Center in Colorado, has been named the chief medical officer of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Dr. Beim founded her practice Alpine Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine & Regional Hand Center in 1999 and Gunnison County's first ASC in 2006.

Dr. Steven Meier performs new cartilage procedure at La Peer Health Systems.
Steven Meier, MD, a medical director of La Peer Health System's Knee Surgery Center of Excellence, performed the first DeNovo NT Natural Tissue Graft at the center. The tissue graft is a biologic treatment for early intervention and cartilage repair.

Physicians' Eye Surgery Center of Charleston joins AmSurg.
AmSurg has welcomed Physicians' Eye Surgery Center of Charleston (N.C.). The center has received the Apex Quality Award. Becky Robinson serves as the administrator and 10 physicians perform procedures at the ASC.

98% of ASCs participating in ASCQR meet requirements.
CMS has announced that 98 percent of the ambulatory surgery centers participating in the Ambulatory Surgical Center Quality Reporting Program have met the requirements and will receive the full 1.8 percent annual payment update for the 2014 calendar year. The two percent of ASCs that did not meet the requirements will face a 2 percent reduction in annual payments for the calendar year 2014.

KDMC Outpatient Surgery Center celebrates 10th anniversary.
King's Daughters Medical Center Outpatient Surgery Center in Ashland, Ky., celebrates its 10th anniversary this month. The center has 28 team members, 10 of which have been with the center since it opened it doors on Nov. 3, 2003.

Demand for specialists to outweigh primary care through 2025.
A recent Health Affairs report has shown that the demand for specialists will grow more than the demand for primary care physicians through 2025. The demand for primary care is expected to grow 14 percent, while vascular surgery demand will grown 31 percent and cardiology 20 percent.
