Florida House passes bill allowing 24-hour stays at ASCs.
The Florida House Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee voted seven to five to approve HB 7111, which would allow ASCs in the state to keep patients for 24 hours. The bill would also allow the creation of 72-hour stay recovery care centers.
Number of ASCs grows 12% from 2007 to 2012.
The number of Medicare-certified ASCs in the U.S. grew 12 percent from 4,798 in 2007 to 5,357 in 2012, according to MedPAC data. The growth rate of ASCs from year to year has been overall declining since 2007. From 2006 to 2007, the number of ASCs rose 5.9 percent. From 2011 to 2012, the number rose just 1.2 percent.
Medical device recalls increase 97% over past decade.
There were 604 medical device recalls in 2003 and 1,190 recalls in 2012, a jump of 97 percent, according to the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health Medical Device Recall Report. The jump can be attributed to increased efforts to improve quality and safety of devices, as well as improved device company awareness and reporting.
Dr. Jonathan Frantz brings new technology to Suncoast Surgery Center.
Ophthalmologist Jonathan Frantz, MD, recently incorporated the VERION Image Guided System into his practice, including Suncoast Surgery Center. The new technology will be a part of a full Cataract Refractive Suite.
HBCBS of New Jersey launches program to improve colonoscopy.
Horizon BlueCross BlueShield of New Jersey launched a new program designed to improve colonoscopy quality, cost and patient experience through provider collaboration. Thus far, Horizon BCBS has partnered with 31 of its network physicians in more than 20 locations.
Kaleida Health to open joint venture ASC in Orchard Park.
Kaleida Health and a group of 22 physicians plan to open Southtowns Ambulatory Surgery Center in Orchard Park, N.Y. The State Department of Health has recommend approval for the project, despite opposition from several nearby hospitals and health systems.
Dr. Steve Traina performs surgery on Denver Nugget at Midtown Surgical Center.
Steve Traina, MD, recently performed knee surgery on Denver Nugget forward J.J. Hickson at Midtown Surgical Center in Denver. Mr. Hickson suffered an ACL tear during play.
