Co-founder of first freestanding ASC Dr. Wallace Reed dies.
Wallace Reed, MD, co-founder of the first freestanding ASC in the U.S. died at the age of 97. Dr. Reed was also a "founding father" of ASCA and an advocate for ASCs.
Colorectal cancer rate drops 30%.
A recent study published the journal Cancer found the rate of colorectal cancer among Americans 50 and older has fallen 30 percent in the last decade. The percentage of Americans up-to-date on recommended colorectal cancer screening increased from 55 to 65 percent during the past 10 years. Americans 65 and older have shown a 7 percent drop in colon cancer rates from 2008 to 2010. Read the full report on Becker's ASC Review.
NJAASC sends objection letter to New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance.
The New Jersey Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers recently sent a formal letter of objection to the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance, regarding the new Liberty Mutual Assignment of Benefits form that went into effect for motor vehicle claims on Feb. 17. The NJAASC specifically objects to the Medical Provider Agreement.
Physicians, SCA to open Greater Long Beach Endoscopy Center.
Developers broke ground on the 90,000-square-foot Douglas Park Medical Office Park in Long Beach, Calif. One of the new medical office buildings will be occupied by physicians of Long Beach Gastroenterology. The physicians will operate the Greater Long Beach Endoscopy Center, affiliated with Surgical Care Affiliates.
5M enrolled in PPACA.

Albanian Health Fund Dignitaries travel to Lancaster Gastroenterology Procedure Center.
Professor Xheladin Dracini, Ambassador Ahmet Shala and Vasil Naci of the Albanian Health Fund visited AmSurg's Lancaster (Pa.) Gastroenterology Procedure Center. The dignitaries know AmSurg partner Mark Johnston, MD, through his work with the Albanian Health Fund.
Northwest Texas Surgery Center names new administrator.
Jeff Barnhart officially joined Northwest Texas Surgery Center in Amarillo on March 4. Mr. Barnhart previously served as the CEO and administrator of St. Joseph Health Center in Bellville, Texas.
