CMS updates scrap list of prescribed emergency equipment required for ASCs.
Earlier this year, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services no longer require ASCs to have a specific list of emergency equipment required for every operating room. The requirements now state that the ASC governing body and staff must decide what equipment is necessary for the patient population.

CMS updates advanced directives interpretative guidelines.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has updated interpretive guidelines for CMS State survey agencies and regional offices, including updates for ambulatory surgery centers. ASC leaders are not allowed to issue a blanket statement refusing to comply with advance patient directives, but are allowed to decline aspects of the advance directives, as allowed within state law.

Dr. Blake Curd appointed to South Dakota State Senate.
South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has appointed R. Blake Curd, MD, president of Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Orthopedic Institute, to the South Dakota State Senate. Dr. Curd also serves as the chairman of the board of directors for Surgical Management Professionals, director of Physician Hospitals of America and manager for Medical Facilities Corp.

Dr. Dennis Sagini joins Lee Memorial Sanctuary Outpatient Surgery Center council.
Dennis Sagini, MD, an orthopedic surgeon in Fort Myers, Fla., has been appointed to the Lee Memorial Sanctuary Outpatient Surgery Center's Surgery Center Council. Dr. Sagini will represent the independent physicians operating at the surgery center.

New Georgia law reinforces physician protection from medical liability.
A new Georgia law prohibits federal healthcare standards or guidelines from creating the possibility of new legal action against physicians. If physicians do not meet quality improvement metrics, this cannot be used against them in medical liability cases.

St. Luke's Surgicenter completes $6.5M expansion.
St Luke's Surgicenter in Lee's Summit, Mo., has completed a $6.5 million, 15,000-square-foot expansion project. The surgery center now has 30 patient rooms and updated equipment.

Secure QualityNet Portal now available to surgery center users.
Registered QualityNet users at ambulatory surgery centers can now enroll for access to the Secure QualityNet Portal. There is now a six-step new user enrollment process.
