Here are seven news updates for ambulatory surgery center leaders to know for Dec. 9, 2013.

Medical group practice acquisitions slow.
Medical group acquisitions declined 27 percent from the fourth quarter of 2012 to the first quarter in 2013, which only saw 12 deals. In 2012, there were only 70 medical group acquisition deals reported overall and 21 for IDS/hospitals, according to the Deloitte issue brief, "Physician-Hospital Employment: This Time It's Different."

OIG: HIPAA privacy standards not being met.
HHS' Office of the Inspector General has released a report stating that the Office for Civil Rights has not been meeting all federal requirements in its oversight and enforcement of HIPAA privacy standards.

Dr. Donald Kramer discusses Northstar Healthcare on Interlinked TV.
Donald Kramer, CEO of Northstar Healthcare, discussed the company's outlook for 2014 on the Interlinked Investment News Channel. Northstar Healthcare intends to begin a strong acquisitions program. Northstar recently bid on two ASCs, located in Dallas and Phoenix.

Digestive Disease Specialists, MDSave offer online bundled pricing.
Digestive Disease Specialists, based in Oklahoma City, has partnered with MDSave to offer online bundled pricing for colonoscopy. Patients will be able to purchase and schedule colonoscopies directly through MDSave.com.

AMA, MGMA release fact sheet on Medicare claim denials.
The American Medical Association and Medical Group Management Association have released a fact sheet designed to help physicians prepare for new Medicare denial edits, to go into effect Jan. 6, 2014.

Surgery Center Cedar Rapids begins expansion project.
Surgery Center Cedar Rapids in Iowa has initiated a $3.4 million expansion project. The project includes the addition of 7,000 square feet, a new entrance, two patient care rooms and two operating rooms.

AAAHC reaccredits Short Hills Surgery Center.
The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care has reaccredited Short Hills Surgery Center in Millburn, N.J.
